How to use your butters
Our apothecary butters are made with pure natural ingredients — no fillers, no water, no synthetic additives. Here's how to get the most from them.
Always do a patch test first
Even with natural ingredients, individual skin reactions can vary. Before using any new product, apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or elbow. Wait 24–48 hours. If you notice any redness, itching, swelling, or irritation, do not use the product and consult your GP or pharmacist.
A patch test is especially important if you have eczema, psoriasis, sensitive skin, or are using the product on a baby or child.
Step-by-step application
Start with clean, dry skin
Apply to freshly washed skin that has been gently patted dry. A little moisture left on the skin helps the butter absorb more easily.
Use a small amount
Our butters are rich and concentrated — a pea-sized amount goes a long way. Warm it between your palms first to help it melt and spread evenly.
Morning use — face butter
Apply face butter after cleansing in the morning. Allow a few minutes to absorb before applying anything else. It doubles as a gentle primer.
Evening use — body butter
Body butter works best applied in the evening, allowing overnight absorption. Focus on dry areas: elbows, knees, heels, and hands.
A few helpful tips
- Less is more — start with a small amount and build up if needed.
- Store your butter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- If the butter melts in warm weather, it will re-solidify when cooled — this doesn't affect quality.
- Face butter is lighter; body butter is richer. Don't use body butter on your face regularly.
- For best results, use consistently morning and/or evening.

While our products are made with gentle, natural ingredients, we always recommend speaking to your GP, dermatologist, or pharmacist before use if any of the following apply:
- You have a known allergy to any listed ingredient
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding (check with your midwife or GP first)
- Your skin condition is infected, weeping, or broken
- You are using prescribed topical medications
- A child under 12 months will be using the product
- Your eczema or psoriasis is severe or uncontrolled
